What to do if the cervical lymph nodes are enlarged?

This rather lengthy post provides an overview

Acute respiratory infection, or SARS, in a child is not uncommon. Experienced parents are usually quite calm about the appearance of a child of discharge from the nose, a slight increase in temperature, lethargy. The situation is banal, does not require much intervention. It is enough to ensure a plentiful warm drink, peace, home mode for several days - and the baby will quickly recover, go to kindergarten again ... But what to do if another –- an increase in the cervical lymph nodes joins the described phenomena? As you know, the cervical lymph nodes react to inflammation in the teeth, gums or tonsils. It is necessary to carefully examine the child’s oral cavity, paying special attention to the space on the right and left of the root of the tongue, where enlarged inflamed tonsils can be found. Immediately begin to rinse the throat with a solution of chamomile, soda or other antiseptics. But what if the cervical lymph nodes are enlarged, and the signs of tonsillitis were not detected? Take the child’s neck: if the nodes are painless, soft under the fingers, this can be a sign of any infection caused by the viruses of the herpes family. Well, if the “thickening” in the neck is painful, and the swelling spreads to the lower jaw and cheeks, this can be a sign of epidemic mumps (in another way, the well -known “pig”). In any case, only a pediatrician can find out the reason for the increase in the cervical lymph nodes, he will prescribe treatment. And to reduce edema and improve the condition of the lymph nodes, resorptions and ointments are prescribed, a light massage will be useful and even, in the absence of contraindications, sparing thermal procedures, such as the woolen scarf, with the neck. Parents rarely pay attention to other groups of lymph nodes. Sometimes the child himself can complain that something in the axillary region interferes with him. Often this is due to swelling, inflammation of the lymph nodes of the axillary group, and the most common causes for this are infectious skin lesions (carefully inspect the back, shoulders, front surface of the body for abscesses).
If you find redness, small pimples or even a boil - be sure to contact a dermatologist, and in the case of a large painful rash, a surgeon will be able to help. In any case, enlarged, and even more painful lymph nodes should not be ignored, counting on the therapeutic effect of the "iodine mesh", which is most often limited to home treatment.
