Film Review: Visegrad Cinema Days

This rather lengthy post provides an overview

Of course, movies are not just blockbusters, which by their nature and algorithms are "international" movies. This is a good choice in the context of leisure, but in order to truly enjoy the art of cinematography, it is necessary to take into account the films representing national schools.

The October Cinema, one of the centers of arthouse cinema, presents the Visegrad Cinema Days Festival. This project, focused on contemporary film works from the Visegrad Group region, a grouping of four Central European countries: Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia, starts on November 14. The program itself was prepared by the KIFF Molodost, whose specialists formed it together with partner organizations of the Visegrad Four countries: the Polish Film Institute, the Slovak Institute of Cinematography, the Czech Film Fund and the Hungarian National Film Fund. It opens with the film directed by Martin Shulik "The Translator" (Tlmocnik / The Interpreter), which was presented by the director himself at the opening ceremony.

At the opening ceremony

... A man comes up to the Vienna apartment - the door is opened to him, and he says: "I'm looking for Mr. Graubner. He killed my parents during World War II." The owner is initially hostile to the statement, saying that his father is dead, but the guest piques his curiosity. Where Georg Graubner later "hires" Ali Ungaro as a translator and they travel to Slovakia, where they will find answers to many questions of their own stories at the last turn of their lives.

This film can be considered as a road movie, a "road accident" - but the story of a journey not only among the picturesque paintings of a wonderful country, but also in a time when the son of the executioner and the victim are trying to answer important questions. Moreover, they could simply send a request to the archive, but together their journey becomes a certain "journey of forgiveness", where they meet the descendants of those who saved Jews, and those who killed and were the mastermind of inhuman torture. The author does not "exaggerate", the story is not rich in contrasts, creates a certain realism of the narrative, as well as the difference in the characters of George and Ali, then allows the characters to understand the past more clearly. The author also does not ignore the events in the East of Ukraine - they are intertwined either with the background because of the news, or even with the image of a boy from Lugansk, who, along with other refugees, brings up his daughter Ali - Edita in the settlement...

The main characters, Ali and Georg, were portrayed on the screen by Jiri Menzel and Peter Simonishek. At first glance, they are completely different, but they are united by a common desire to find the truth and reconciliation. Reconciliation is among themselves, but not with crimes, which, as the director himself said, are often forgotten and sometimes "leveled" in Slovakia itself. This motif of "finding history" is also felt in the images of other figures who cannot be called "secondary" - the children of both the righteous and the collaborators often had the same hardships...

As a conclusion. Actually, the film "Translator" is an excellent example of humanistic cinema, the motives of which are relevant now in our country. The festival program includes a number of Oscar-winning films - Vaclav Margul's "The Painted Bird" from the Czech Republic, "The Body of Christ" from Poland and "Let There be Light" from Slovakia by Marko Shkop. In addition, viewers will find in the program a number of original films in the genre of popular cinema, which will expand the imagination of both cinema and our country's international neighbors.
